Leonard is originally from Tralee in Co. Kerry and his playing style has been strongly influenced by his home county as well as the Sliabh Luachra style. He started learning the tin whistle from his uncle at age 8 before moving to the pipes in his teens. Leonard has been described as one of Ireland’s “best pipers, be it solo, duet and group playing” (tradconnect.com).
He has toured across Europe and America extensively and has collaborated with John Spillane, Pól Brennan (Clannad) and Luka Bloom. In 2015, he was named Live Ireland Musician of the Year and also The Irish American News Musician of the Year. He has released two acclaimed solo albums ‘Mind the Pipes’ and ‘New Road’ and is in demand for workshops and festivals around the world
